Definition Conveyor Belt Splicing
The splicing of conveyor belts is the process of joining two pieces of conveyor belt together. Usually this is done either to lengthen the original conveyor belt or to repair a torn or damaged conveyor belt. Because there are so many industries that use conveyor systems, there are many types of conveyor belts and components. To properly splice a belt, it is necessary to take into account the type of belt, the speed of the conveyor system, the materials running on the belt, and the environment of the conveyor.
Importance of Professional Splicing
If a splice is made incorrectly, the integrity of the belt and the entire conveyor system is at risk. The longer a splice lasts, the less downtime the conveyor system has. In manufacturing, production and mining environments, downtime can result in high financial loss. Improper pulleys can also cause the material carried by the belt to fall through, causing problems and further loss of profits.
Vulcanization Splicing
During vulcanization, a splice is created using heat and/or chemicals. This type of bonding is more complex and requires special belt vulcanization tools, expertise and a clean, temperature and humidity controlled environment. However, if the belt splicer does this correctly, this type of splice is smoother and usually more durable than a mechanical splice.
There are two types of vulcanisation: hot and cold vulcanisation. Hot vulcanisation is the process of making joints by applying heat and pressure using a vulcanising press. In cold vulcanisation, a joint is made by using chemicals to join two pieces of belt.
Both types of vulcanisation require more time and preparation than mechanical connections.
